Professional traders focus on protecting capital first, profits second

// Lesson Content
The single most important rule in trading is this: never risk more than you can afford to lose on a single trade. Professional traders treat their trading account like a business -- they protect the capital at all costs. Here is why most traders fail: 1. They risk 5-10% per trade, thinking they need to go big to make money 2. They have no stop loss, hoping the market will come back 3. They revenge trade after losses, doubling position sizes 4. They trade without a plan, making emotional decisions The mathematics of drawdown are brutal: - Risk 10% per trade = 10 consecutive losses = account destroyed - Risk 5% per trade = 10 consecutive losses = 60% drawdown (need 150% gain to recover) - Risk 2% per trade = 10 consecutive losses = 18% drawdown (need 22% gain to recover) - Risk 1% per trade = 10 consecutive losses = 9.5% drawdown (need 10.5% gain to recover) The difference between 2% and 5% risk is the difference between a recoverable setback and account destruction.
📌 Risk 1-2% per trade maximum. This single rule separates professionals from gamblers.
